Vacancy: Digital Manager (Part time, freelance)

As Bloody Scotland grows and adapts to the increasingly hybrid-focused approach of book festivals in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, you will oversee and manage all digital elements of the Bloody Scotland International Crime Writing Festival in this fast-moving and constantly changing environment. You will be expected to attend in-person events such as board meetings, our launches in June 2022 and the festival itself in Stirling on 15-18 September 2022.


  1. Website/Online
  • Work with our technical partners to ensure smooth delivery of all digital content at the festival including live-streamed, pre-recorded and filmed/uploaded events.
  • Set up ticket sales with partners (both physical and online) and monitor daily sales figures against social media analytics and act on findings where necessary.
  • Ensure all information on the website is relevant and up to date.
  • Upload the annual festival programme to the website adhering to formatting guidelines.
  • Source and upload original content for the blog on a regular basis including competitions, McIlvanney Prize and Bloody Scotland Debut of the Year longlists, shortlists and winner announcements and more.
  • Designing web assets (to complement those already created).
  • Taking the lead on and communicating with the website’s host on any needs.
  • Deal with any operational issues that customers encounter.
  1. Social Media
  • Create original, engaging multimedia content for Twitter, Facebook and Instagram on a regular basis with the purpose of keeping Bloody Scotland’s audience informed and engaged, expanding that audience and generating ticket sales where appropriate.
  • Designing social media assets (to complement those already created).
  • Monitor social media accounts regularly and consistently within agreed hours to answer queries about the festival via mentions and direct messages.
  1. Other
  • Bloody Scotland Book Club: maintain the Facebook discussion group, and deliver the monthly live event, including Zoom hosting and cueing of video assets during the event.
  • Maintain the monthly Bloody Scotland newsletters on MailChimp and come up with a year-long strategy for content.
  • Write annual reports for the committee and board on social media and website analytics with findings and suggestions for moving forward.

Person specification


  • Ability to work independently and prioritise effectively remotely to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work with a team and keep them up to date with essential/agreed information while taking suggestions on board
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and help colleagues and customers with clear communication 
  • Experience with running Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts, ideally for an arts organisation, festival, charity, or similar
  • Experience with WordPress and managing plugins and using Google Analytics to monitor traffic and behaviours
  • Experience with Vimeo, YouTube and Spektrix box office system.
  • A basic knowledge of HTML
  • Experience with MS Office applications
  • Experience with cloud storage such as GoogleDocs, Google Drive and Dropbox
  • Experience with maintaining mailing lists and creating newsletters via MailChimp
  • Experience with Issuu
  • Experience writing and adapting engaging copy for a variety of online platforms
  • Experience in designing original image assets for social media using software such as (but not limited to) Adobe Photoshop and InDesign
  • A good eye for detail including proofreading skills
  • Ability to spot and act on new opportunities in digital/social media platforms that could benefit Bloody Scotland and be able to present findings to the committee and board
  • Ability to create and maintain good working relationships both in person and via email/phone
  • Ability to represent Bloody Scotland during professional situations which can include some customer service and care during the festival itself


  • Experience working or volunteering for a literary festival 
  • A knowledge of and interest in crime writing
  • A knowledge of the operations of the book publishing industry
  • A knowledge and understanding of working with local and national press within crime writing and the arts more generally

Job details

Title: Digital Manager
Reports to: Festival Director
Location: Ideally Scotland-based but will consider UK-wide applications
Dates: Starting late-January 2022 with peak months typically being from May to end of September with hours reducing after then.
Hours: Part time, freelance
Approximately 10 hours per week in peak months (May – September), reducing to approximately 10-12 hours per month in off-season months (October – April) – though subject to change with agreement with the position-holder 
Flexible working will be needed
Rate of pay: Negotiable – starting at £15 an hour. Accommodation and travel will be covered where the Digital Manager is essential to be in attendance to cover the events on social media or to support the team.
